2009/10

In the year 2009/10 we raised over £14,000 from 16 events, several of which were new to the club.  Our main source was as usual from the Fete which raised £5,500 with a record number of 3,700 people attending.  During the 32 weeks  in 2008 and 2009  it was open, our share of the profits from the Bookshop in Marlowes amounted to £3,150.  The Abba Illusion Concert in October raised £2,800.  Our new ventures were The Elves Posting House Event at the Festival of  Light, the K9-9K Dog Walk in April and the Swing Dance evening in May.  We also raised funds by helping at other Lions Club events such as the Windsor Horse Ride, the Watford Horse Ride and Watford Firework Display.  We raised money as usual with our Christmas Hamper Draw and Easter Egg Raffle.

We have donated over £9,000 from our fund raising efforts and this money was given to various International and local good causes.  Internationally we sent money to Water Aid, Indian Eye Camps and the Haiti Relief Fund.  We also gave money towards medical resources in Bosnia and the National Arboretum project. We continued to help with the education of 2 Kenyan boys.
Locally we gave money to The Hospice of St Francis and Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, Hope for Children, St Johns Ambulance and many other good causes.

Some of the youth organisations we helped this year were the ATC, the Swan Project and the 1st Berkhamsted Scouts.  We continued to support the Raiders Football club by purchasing safety spectacles and by sponsoring them to take part in the Multiple District Football competition.  As in past years we gave money to the St Albans Leos.

We were delighted that Ben Chalmers, a pupil at Bridgewater School, produced a winning entry in the Lions Club International, Multiple District 105 Peace Poster Competition.
Several members of the club went away for a weekend in February to Thorseby Hall near Nottingham which everyone enjoyed.  We played bowls, went for local walks and took part in  a murder mystery evening in the Great Hall.  In the summer we held our usual Barbecue and Swim and another very successful Progressive Dinner took place in April.

We held our usual Senior Citizens parties in October and March and the Old Boys Night Out in November. We also helped at the Gateway Barbecue and the Harrow Senior Citizens party.  We organised Meals on Wheels on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day for the last time as arrangements for this service have now changed.  Recently we took senior citizens to Ashridge Management College for our Community Service Day.

We still run our minibus although it is not easy to find drivers under 70 who are able to drive it when necessary.  We continue to hire out the minibus and our marquee.
